Amazon’s petition, reviewed by TOI, said Biyani-led Future Group “deliberately and maliciously” disobeyed the ruling by Singapore International Arbitration Centre. Amazon also sought detention of Biyani in a “civil prison” and attachment of his assets.
The petition has asked the court to direct Future Group to not take any steps to complete the disputed transaction with any entity that is part of the Reliance Group. Future Retail, in a filing to the BSE on Monday evening, said Amazon’s lawyers have informed the company of the matter and it will defend the case. An Amazon India spokesperson declined to comment on the matter.
Amazon’s latest move underscores the importance of the Indian market, and the US company’s desire to restrain potentially major adversaries like Reliance. Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance is scaling up its new online commerce venture with JioMart.
The Delhi HC had in December allowed Future to proceed with its sale to Reliance. Amazon had then filed an application with the same court to review the ruling.
